Card 484 gives you the chance of
getting a jar of caterpillars
and is then discarded.

During this scenario
whilst underground
the board can reset due to the rule of ‘Adventure card not available’ and you can restart on the Adventure Card containing the 484 reference and therefore
easily obtain another jar of caterpillars even though you already took it!
because card 484 was discarded, not banished, and so returned during the board reset.

Is this a valid sequence of events, or a mistake?

It's valid.
But you need to be lucky if you want to succeed the scenario just by this way. ;-)

I did get 3 from that card and 2 from other spaces (which were banished).
